The Impact of Online Gambling on the Casino Industry

Abstract

In June of 2018, New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy signed a bill into law that permitted sports betting to take place in the state. What Murphy likely did not expect is how much this decision would abet the online gambling industry. Online gaming allows avid gamblers to place bets through a mobile application, where they can select from countless options, from casino games to sporting events. In 2020, mobile devices are ubiquitous. Web applications allow for online dating, work meetings, and now recreational gambling. The online casino industry is steadily growing, bringing the Las Vegas experience to one’s personal cell phone. An avid gambler or an old soul may argue that nothing will ever replace the casino experience, that it is timeless and incapable of being phased out by growing technologies. However, there is already evidence that gamers are trading in their poker chips for the online experience. This paper will analyze the influence of the growing online gambling industry on the casino industry.
