Abstract
In this thesis, a high resolution cylindrical deflector type electrostatic analyzer was designed and built with the purpose of measuring the thermal width of the ion beam in the Princeton Space Physics Laboratory, which is instrumental in the calibration and testing of scientific spaceflight instruments. Special focus is taken in understanding and addressing design constraints of the ESA for measuring the ion beam, as well as understanding the parameters important in the design of electrostatic analyzers. Initial data findings, though inconclusive, indicate that the target analyzer constant was achieved, however the energy resolution and/or thermal width of the ion source is inconsistent with expectations.
