Abstract

Betting and sport have become synonymous with each other in recent years due to the legalization of sports betting in the United States and the emergence of online sports books that make betting as easy as clicking a few buttons on your smartphone. This has skyrocketed the business and created a national epidemic. Regulation has been unable to keep up with the problems surrounding addiction and the advertising strategies used by online sports books to acquire vulnerable individuals and retain addicted gamblers. This study will aim to determine the effect of marketing and advertisement regulation on consumption and revenue in the US sports gambling industry, using, and analyzing data on the Australian sports gambling industry and the US cigarette industry, that have many parallels to the US sports gambling industry, but have undergone drastic regulating changes. This is possible due to the publicly available data on the revenues and taxes of these industries, advertisement data studies and studies done on how advertising and taxation effect individual consumption and broader industry revenue.
