Queer Quantum: Teaching Fundamental Quantum Mechanics using Queer Theory in the Theatrical Mode

Abstract

This paper attempts to determine the efficacy of the theatrical mode and queer quantum analogy, alongside discussions of problem solving and live physics demonstrations, of communicating fundamentals of quantum mechanics to a broad audience. This is done through the production of the play, Liminality, written by myself specifically for this experiment, which combines all of these aspects into a single play. Audiences were quizzed before and after watching the performance, as well as asked to engage in a Q&A talkback with me to determine the level of physics knowledge imparted on them by the play. Overall, there was a noted increase in accuracy across the quiz responses, and the talkback revealed that audiences were intrigued by many of the physics concepts and the queer quantum analogy, having a somewhat better understanding of the material. This paper thus serves as a preliminary investigation along this particular line of inquiry, and suggests that more research is warranted and needed in this field.
