Abstract
Petra is most often understood as an image. Its facades circulate as icons of carved stone, studied through style, symbolism, and preservation. Yet the question of how these monuments were actually made–how much material was removed, how labor was organized, how excavation was sequenced–remains comparatively underexamined. This thesis approaches Petra not as a finished object, but as a construction problem; it investigates two of Petra’s monumental rock-cut facades, Al-Khazneh and Ad-Dier, through digital reconstruction, takeoffs, and labor estimation. Rather than attempting to produce exact historical timelines, the project develops a framework for understanding how large-scale rock-cut architecture could have been organized, measured, and executed under logistical constraints such as topography, scale, and labor distribution. In doing so, this thesis argues that Petra’s facades can be read not only as symbolic or aesthetic compositions, but as the result of highly coordinated systems of excavation. By translating photographic data into measurable geometry and linking that geometry to construction logic, the work reframes these monuments as records of excavation estimates. This approach provides a clear quantitative perspective on the scale and organization of excavation that may have been required to execute the construction of Al-Khazneh and Ad-Dier. This shift in perspective, positions contemporary construction modeling tools–typically used to optimize modern construction projects–as analytical instruments for interpreting ancient ones.While these tools are grounded in present day assumptions of efficiency and control, their application in this thesis reveals the scale, organization, and constraints that likely shaped the production of Petra’s most iconic facades. Ultimately, the results of this thesis demonstrates that contemporary digital tools can be used in a construction management perspective and applied to ancient sites, offering one of many possible frameworks for analyzing historical construction practices worldwide.
