Handwashed

Abstract

​​"Handwashed" is a full-length play that explores the tensions between survival and self-determination within a working-class Black family located in north Philadelphia. Set in and around a neighborhood laundromat, the play follows Emmanuel, a young man on the cusp of finishing community college and transferring to a bigger school, as he navigates grief, familial responsibility, and upward mobility. At its core, the play asks what it means to break a cycle: whether true change comes from environmental factors, internal transformation, or something in between the two. Through centering characters who are often forced to choose between personal advancement and communal care, "Handwashed" positions survival as a collective process as opposed to an individual one.
