Modern digital communication prioritizes speed at the expense of the emotional depth, particularly in long-distance friendships. We introduce Haumail, a slow messaging platform in which digital courier characters carry messages across a virtual map, producing transit delays of hours to days based on the distance between correspondents. Drawing on anthropological theories of gift-giving, psychological research on anticipation, and human-computer interaction frameworks of slow design, Haumail uses time as a design tool to make care visible. Through a one-month power user study (N=3) and a 14-day within-subjects field study (N=36) pairing participants with both a long-distance friend and a stranger, we identify three conditions under which delay enhances perceived care: coherence between delay and communicative format, sustained legibility of the wait, and reciprocal circulation of effort. This work aims to demonstrate how temporal friction can be leveraged to enhance perceived care in digital communication.
